Rob: What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?

I’ve never met a person who didn’t have a personal relationship with music. Some of us have deeper ones than others. But we’re all in the cathedral. It could have been a band or a voice that first opened the doors. Or maybe it was a rhythm or a melody that called you to the pews. But when we heard that sound, whatever it was, we were transformed. We waved flags.

I’ve a huge, huge problem with people talking at gigs, which is about to become abundantly clear.

Why Plan B’s Ill Manors is the greatest British protest song in years

I pretty much almost tumbld the entire article, but it’s worth it. I’m not really a fan of rap or hip hop (mostly because what I do hear is American and… I don’t relate to it at all).

I wasn’t fussed about Plan B’s last album, The Defamation of Strickland Banks. This though? This is exciting. This has a message closer to home. This is something to think about.

I saw The Kill Van Kulls supporting The Naked & Famous and also at …possibly the single launch for this song. Not sure.

They’re ace anyway and sort of 80s, which is appropriate for a band that I reckon was probably born then. Still, they’ve got great live presence and really filled the venues I saw them at.

SO MANY THINGS.

  1. subjective reality/personal reality – this is something that I studied a bit at university, doing computer science, artificial intelligence and virtual reality. SO fascinating to think about
  2. personal responsibility – I am all for MANNING UP AND DOING IT YOURSELF. If something needs doing, then I will do it. I will not be waiting for some authority figure to deal with it or give me permission to sort it out.
  3. Hidden codes/language
  4. lack of timeline/context in access to music/simultaneous access to  all of music old and new – I remember 10/15 years ago being the only person into Ben Folds Five or AFI or whoever and NO ONE around me being into any of the same bands. Partly because I could hear one random song on the radio or on tv and be able to remember that enough to try and search out the rest of the band’s music and being very much into music press when no one else I knew was. Now? I hear a song, I figure out who it is, search it down on hypemachine or youtube or soundcloud or whatever, I tweet it to EVERYONE and then I’ll get at least one person who likes it
  5. PORTUGAL – I <3 Portugal. My auntie lives there and she cooks the only omelette I will eat. She’s 80 and can’t drive but she goes grocery shopping for “old” people and carries the bags on the bus and walks up hilly roads to deliver it. She is ACES
