Making a documentary about fans who are girls
We are going to make a documentary series about fandom. From boybands to beer, we want to look at the way fans (in the UK, we’re afraid- unless we get commissioned for a second season and someone pays for us to go abroad) relate to each other, who they are and what they do. We particularly want to look at fans who currently or have previously or want to in the future identify as female but we’re not going to blur out any male-identifying friends they have or something.
We want to talk about overnight stays in crowded hotel rooms, queueing at 4am for tickets, cross-continent dashes for specific events, getting elbowed in the face in mosh pits, stabbing yourself in the thumb making cosplay, fandom channels (from hashtags to those old Livejournal confession communities, to usenet, to fanzines and far beyond) and we want to talk about what it means for fans to be fans. We want to talk about the fantastic, brilliant bits and the bits that sometimes aren’t so great. We want to talk about inclusivity, exclusionary behaviour and how fandoms make and break friendships. And we want to travel around to as many places where fans are gathering as possible and talk to as many as possible, in the context of explaining fandom to an audience who might not know much about it.
What we want most to do is talk about fans as human beings in all the glorious complexity that implies. And we want to film it, so that other people can see it. We’re tired of bad representations of fans in the media and we realised we could do it better. So we’re going to, with a lot of help.
THIS IS A THING. A THING THAT IS EXCITING AND INTERESTING TO ME. YES. GO AND LOOK.
