Random Headcanon: That Federation vessels in Star Trek seem to experience bizarre malfunctions with such overwhelming frequency isn’t just an artefact of the television serial format. Rather, it’s because the Federation as a culture are a bunch of deranged hyper-neophiles,
tooling around in ships packed full of beyond-cutting-edge tech they
don’t really understand. Endlessly frustrating if you have to fight
them, because they can pull an effectively unlimited number of bullshit
space-magic countermeasures out of their arses – but they’re as likely
as not to give themselves a lethal five-dimensional wedgie in the
process. All those rampant holograms and warp core malfunctions and
accidentally-traveling-back-in-time incidents? That doesn’t actually
happen to anyone else; it’s literally just Federation vessels that go off the rails like that. And they do so on a fairly regular basis.

So to everyone else in the galaxy, all humans are basically Doc Brown.

Aliens who have seen the Back to the Future movies literally don’t realise that Doc Brown is meant to be funny. They’re just like “yes, that is exactly what all human scientists are like in my experience”.

THE ONLY REASON SCOTTY IS CHIEF ENGINEER INSTEAD OF SOMEONE FROM A SPECIES WITH A HIGHER TECHNOLOGICAL APTITUDE IS BECAUSE EVERYONE FROM THOSE SPECIES TOOK ONE LOOK AT THE ENTERPRISE’S ENGINE ROOM AND RAN AWAY SCREAMING

vulcan science academy: why do you need another warp core

humans: we’re going to plug two of them together and see if we go twice as fast

vsa: last time we gave you a warp core you threw it into a sun to see if the sun would go twice as fast

humans: hahaha yeah

humans: it did tho

vsa: IT EXPLODED

humans: it exploded twice as fast

I love this. Especially because of how well it plays with my headcanon that the Federation does so much better against the Borg than anyone else because beating the Borg with military tactics is nigh-impossible, but beating them with wacky superscience shenanigans works as long as they’re unique wacky superscience shenanigans.

The above is a collection of reaction gifs. I regularly see these images appended to posts, as a visual comment on the post. These images aren’t typically sourced or credited, which is too bad, because images like these are a big part of the culture and visual vocabulary of Tumblr. Though by the same token, sourcing every image used expressively this way is a pretty cumbersome proposition.

The standard for what should receive credit and what is a free-for-all is still being worked out, every day, among people who use new platforms and websites. On Tumblr, the rough standard is something like: don’t repost someone else’s post, reblog it, so the original poster gets the responses and credit. Fair enough!

But what if you don’t want to duplicate a post, but rather, to recombine images from different sources to create new narratives? You know, the kind of thing that gives us McFassyXovers like Jungkov and David 8/David 9.

I thought it was typical to recombine the relevant images in a new post, and the polite thing to do was to credit the sources of the gifs when possible.

Of course others are free to disagree, and when one gifmaker told me she thought it was rude that I used some of her XMFC gif caps in a post of my own (with link/credit), I immediately apologized and removed her images. I suggested that in the future, she might want to append a note to her image posts specifying that she doesn’t want those images used for other purposes. She didn’t care for that suggestion, and after a couple of exchanges, I told her that I would avoid using any images from her in the future, but beyond that, we obviously weren’t going to change each others’ minds, so there was nothing else to say.

Differing opinions on this matter are totally understandable. Credit is a grey area when it comes to images that originate from someone else’s film, photo or comic. As far as I know, there’s no online Miss Manners to codify how much credit is due to a person who scans a magazine photo, vs. a person who notices the photo is flipped and corrects the image, vs. a person who then incorporates the corrected scan into a manip.

But I don’t think you need Miss Manners to tell you that it’s pretty sad to respond to such a disagreement by leaving trolling comments on unrelated fics. That’s not a new media, digital age issue. That’s a being-an-asshole issue. because-xaviers/”appley-creations”/aria-the-apple/ariadnethearchitect: kindly fuck off.
