Oh God Steve Harris.

Thanks to the XFM listen again service once again containing the DJing delights of a certain Mr Steve Harris, I get to listen to his two weekend shows EVERY SINGLE DAY. Should I so choose.

Realistically, it just means that I’m listening yesterday and today to the two shows that I only caught parts of at the weekend (mostly, because I do stuff at the weekend and… on Sunday afternoon, I was napping to it).

So far I’m listening to the rest of Saturday’s show that I didn’t finish and Steve has been talking about sitting down every day at 5pm with his cup of tea and a biscuit to watch the MJ trial. The whole idea is ridiculously cute to me for some reason. I DON’T KNOW WHY. STOP JUDGING. 😛

An Evening with Frank Turner

An Evening with Frank Turner

Confession time. I’m not really a fan of MCR. With that I mean that I don’t go out of my way to seek them out. I’ll listen to them on the radio. I’ll watch their videos if I happen to see them on TV. I didn’t own any albums till last week though when I went and got the latest one.

Because I won tickets to see them record their “An Evening With…” session for XFM.

Yeah. I really am that jammy. Admittedly, I have the biggest crush ever on the DJ (Steve Harris) who does the evening show on XFM and all these “evening with” affairs and that’s why I was listening at the time and it’s because I know at least 2 people who LOVE LOVE LOVE MCR that I used up the rest of my credit texting the evening show, not thinking anything would come of it. Until the phone rang of course.

(I’m gonna increase my jamminess here, by adding…I’ve won tickets for these “evening with” things twice before – the first was for Bombay Bicycle Club, but life happened and I couldn’t go and then exactly a week later when I won for the Manic Street Preachers – so the XFM phone number is saved in my phone so I don’t automatically ignore it when they ring)

So I won. Which was pretty exciting. And immediately messaged my work colleague and her husband to tell them and to invite her husband along with me – yeah, I know. Weird. But he’s a huge fan. A huge enough fan that the girl I work with unintentionally whistles/hums along with MCR on the radio even though she doesn’t like them.

Thursday rolled round – I went along and it was ACE. I managed to pull off a HUGE surprise for a friend of mine which I’m minimising my rambling about online in case she sees, but she LOVES MCR and this is an epic surprise and I only hope it reaches her ok in the post (I think this is the part I was most excited about, rather than meeting MCR). They played 4 songs – Na na na na…, Sing, Planetary and some other one with “hope” in the title. I’M SORRY, I DON’T KNOW THEIR SONGS. And that last one was cool because there was a girl called Hope there and it was like the song was for her, only it was a coincidence because they had picked out their mini-setlist without knowing who was coming.

Also, the other part of the deal with the Evening With thing is that beforehand, while everyone is hanging out waiting in reception, you have to think of a question to ask the band and then the DJ and I dunno who else pick out the questions they like best and whoever thought of the question gets to ask the band that question. So of course, I’m sitting there. It’s the 10th of February. I know NOTHING about MCR other than Gerard’s kid is called Bandit. I don’t even know if it’s a girl or a boy. Bandit Way as a name is something you remember. So I’m sitting there. The my friend’s husband is thinking of a good question to ask his favourite band. I have no clue. So I go with a topical question. Topical questions are always a good cop-out.

They pick my question. So I got to ask MCR what they got their girlfriends/wives/whatever for Valentines Day (I know so little, I put “significant others” because I HAVE NO IDEA. SORRY) on the radio. Which makes up for the time before when Steve Harris asked me, on the radio, how old I was. Because I didn’t really sound old enough to remember the Manics from back in the day. I’m probably the same age as him actually and yeah. I do remember them from first time round. Because I’m tumblr-old. 😉

So questions done. Songs done. We get to do a little meet and greet thing. I get my amazing surprise sorted, shake their hands, say “hi” kind of awkwardly because you’ve probably grasped it by now.. I have no idea about My Chemical Romance and my friend’s husband is excited and getting a poster signed for his cousin and an album cover done and chatting to Gerard.

And now I just have to watch facebook and wait and see if my amazing surprise arrives ok. It better arrive ok. Or I will be having words. STERN ONES.

I do feel kind of bad for depriving some MASSIVE MCR fan and their similarly obsessive friend from going…but pulling off this surprise has helped me get over it 😀
