(Seriously, though. You learn a lot going minutely through someone else’s edit. Possibly the least useful of which is that actors often pull ridiculous faces when doing fight scenes.)

I just wanna talk for a minute about this shot. This right here is a triumph of writing, directing, editing, acting, and everything in between. All of it comes together, but the performance is the glue of it. Sebastian Stan sells this look so well, and it tells you everything without a single word uttered. Lesser filmmakers would have stopped the scene dead here to give us a series of flashbacks to spell out what’s going on in the mind of James Buchanan Barnes as his memories come back in a flood of pain and grief and loss. Instead, they just let the performance speak for itself, because the actor fucking crushes it here. I am a huge, HUGE fan of scenes where the filmmakers don’t spell it out in some flashback montage or exposition, and just rely on the film storytelling adage, “show, don’t tell” by letting an actor act. It’s such a perfect moment, the climax of the Steve and Bucky arc for this film, in a movie full of great choices, resulting in a direct assault on the feels.

Fuck, I love this scene.

like, I saw the tears in his eyes the first time in the theatre and I just lost it. 15 months later: still not over it.

They set it up so perfectly. They had hit points:

  1. Is he wearing a parachute? – Demonstrating Steve’s ability to fall from tremendous heights and live.
  2. The Smithosonian exhibit – this is Bucky. This is who he was to Steve.
  3. Who the hell is Bucky? – reunion and reveal
  4. He must have survived the fall – paralleling Steve’s survival skills with Bucky’s.
  5. The man on the bridge, who was he? – setting up the fact that the memories are there and available, so we already know that Bucky has the memories and is still in there
  6. Like when we were kids – Steve offers the alternate POV of the same relationship. Specifically being smaller than Bucky, and having Bucky’s hand on his shoulder and “the end of the line”

Which means that when we get to the point in the gif, we already have all the relevant information. They are not spoon-feeding us. They are expecting us to remember exactly what was said and done before, which is a refreshing change.

And that goes for Bucky looking down at Steve with blood on his face, which is so important, because Bucky remembers Steve. Not Cap. Not the uniform. He remembers that skinny little punk who was always smaller than him. And Steve saying his words back at him just seals the deal.
