Bat Facts!

1. Bats account for about 20% of all mammal species worldwide, with about 1200 species.

2. Bats live on all continents except Antarctica.

3. Female bats can control when they get pregnant and give birth by storing sperm in their body for months after mating.

4. There are three bat species that feed solely on blood.

5. About 70% of all bats are insectivores; flying foxes are mainly frugivores.

6. Bats have circulatory systems with valves in both veins and arteries, ensuring blood doesn’t rush to their head when they hang upside down.

7. The world’s largest natural bat colony is the Bracken Bat Cave in Texas, which houses about 20 million bats.

8. Bats are the only mammals that can truly fly (unlike gliding animals like flying squirrels).

9. The smallest species of bat, known as the bumblebee bat, measures 1.1 to 1.3 inches in body length.

10. The largest species of bat, the giant golden-crowned flying fox, can have a wingspan as large as five and a half feet.
